When I was teaching my Sophomores about sonnets, we had looked at examples from Shakespeare, and they were tasked with writing one themselves. The students were appalled at the idea. Then they asked if I was going to write one as well. My first reaction was to say, don’t be ridiculous, I am the teacher; I don’t have to write a sonnet! I then realized that I couldn’t remember the last time I put pen to paper to write a sonnet. There were many forms of poetry that I’d never attempted. And I thought, right, Dr. Flynn, it’s time to put your pen where your mouth is…
(Note: Have a look at the different forms I have attempted so far under “Recent Posts,” and please feel free to share your own attempts at the given forms in the comments section!)
